1. There is new hope that a vaccine for HIV is possible in the near future. Around the world, there are some 33 million people living with the virus. So it's no wonder that news of an experimental vaccine that may ultimately stop the AIDS virus is being met with both optimism and caution. Paul Davis reports.

[Story]
2. For more than a quarter of a century, scientists have searched for a cure to the horror of AIDS. It's become a holy grail. But until now, everything they have tried has failed. That's why they are so excited about the results of largest ever vaccine trial carried out on these volunteers in Thailand. They appeared to have found a way of reducing the risk of developing AIDS. And normally cautious scientists are using the word 'breakthrough'.

[Dr. Supachai Rerks-Ngarm/ Director, AIDS vaccine trail]
"This is a scientific breakthrough. This is the first time that they can prove a vaccine can be developed to prevent infection."

3. The key appears to be using a combination of two previously known vaccines. Individually they were ineffective. But used together, they made a significant difference. This is the first time a human trial of an HIV vaccine has produced positive results. It involved more than 16,000 people who had an average risk of becoming infected. 8,000 were given a placebo, or a dummy drug. 74 of them became infected. The rest were given the combined vaccine. Of those just 51 were infected, meaning the vaccine lowered the risk of infection by 31%. The result that encouraged Dr. Cate Hankins, UN Senior advisor on AIDS.

[Dr. Cate Hankins/ Chief Scientific Officer, UNAIDS]
"It is exciting. It is a scientific advance. There is no doubt about that. We have never had a trial in humans that showed that a vaccine candidate, in this case, 2 candidates had any protective efficacy."

"Are you talking breakthrough?"

"This could be the start. This could absolutely be the start of something big. Yes."

4. Crucially scientists must establish whether the vaccines used in the Thailand trial would have the same impact on the HIV strains found in Africa. Campaigners are cautiously optimisic.

[Annie Lennox/ Aids Campaign]
"How wonderful that scientists have made a breakthrough. All of these years, people have been trying to come up with some kind of vaccine, or some kind of cure, for HIV. And this is definitely a significant step."

Annie Lennox's concern remains when any breakthrough comes, those who need it most, Africa's poor, will be the last to benefit.

Paul Davis, News at 10.
